ELISA'S STORY

The story of a girl from Eastern Europe

A project by Marco Mazzi

The aim of this editorial project is neither to write a book on prostitution nor to tell the story of a young prostitute. Rather, it is to illustrate, through a realistic and conceptual picture, the real life a young woman from Eastern Europe faces when she comes up against the socio-economic models typical of late capitalism. Her point of view can be considered an X-ray of human relationships seen, above all, as a struggle for power in all its various shapes and forms and without any further implications.

Elisa's story is the third step in a social, artistic and epistemological study which began with the work Relational Syntax (2012), a collection of essays on the rapport between aesthetics and politics in post-industrial society, then followed by Uninspired Architecture, a photographic project centring on the undefined spaces of the city of Tirana leading up to a published edition in 2014. Here, the theme is once again Eastern Europe but the focus now centres on a private, personal dimension rather than on an urban outlook.

This text is the result of many hours of tape recordings and registrations and is thus a real life reportage. The material has been written up and edited in such a way that any linguistic items complicating the straight-forward narration – from adjectives to subordinate clauses - have been reduced to a minimum or even eliminated.

Elisa's words do not belong to an author or to an editor. They are words that can be traced to a community and to the social, political and economic context in which an individual lives, acts and is conditioned.

This book would not have taken this form if I had not read, on Vittoria Ciolini's suggestion, Vai pure by Carla Lonzi, a study on power relationships between men and women, this too based on audio recordings.

Michel Foucault's thoughts on the nature and existing forms of power in contemporary society can be traced throughout all of Elisa's story, as a sort of involuntary, underlying continuum.
